Nucor Steel Plant 2008
Students are taken in the cooler morning hours to the Nucor Industries plant in Tuscaloosa. Upon arrival, the group is given a brief overview of how the plant is laid out and a description of the operations they will view. Then the students are teamed with several of the plant engineers and lead to a dressing room where safety gear is provided. The students are then taken in groups through the manufacturing facility where they view the material intake system, the furnaces, the processing system, and the cooling system. Leaving the processing plant headed back to the main offices the students are walked past the wastewater and air control cyclones. Once back in the offices the group is provided lunch and then walked through basic strengths of materials problems with one of the facility engineers. After completing the problem, a number of the plant managers provide a talk about the facility and incentives for seeking a career in engineering.
