E-MAP K-14 Opportunities |
K-14 Teacher Assessment ComponentThe University of Alabama with the National Science Foundation is offering a new summer program to build math skills for students entering engineering, science, and math majors, the Engineering Math Advancement Program (E-MAP). As part of this program, up to 10 slots per semester will be offered to High School and Community College instructors (K-14), or other instructors as space permits, to participate in the class and to provide valuable assessment and evaluation advice. At the request of the Alabama Education Association, the program is working to include Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for instructors for continued math study and evaluation assistance needed to improve the bridge between high school and college pre-calculus and calculus math courses. Program DetailsWho Should Attend: High School and Community College teachers and other instructors who are involved in general education, pre-calculus, calculus, or math-based courses such as physics. What: K-14 Instructors are asked to participate through one of two options:
Instructors will work with professional evaluators. One programmatic evaluator, from outside of Alabama, will work directly with the instructors during one or two days of the program. The math evaluator, located at UA, will work with the instructors on survey information. The evaluators will provide instructional information on how to conduct assessments of math and science programs. Where: The class will be taught on the UA campus. Additional program information can be found on the EMAP website. Housing Costs are Covered: For the One Week Class, the University’s Boone Cabin at Lake Tuscaloosa has been reserved. There are a limited number of slots available at this location. For the Five-Week Class, on-campus dorm rooms will be provided. When: The E-MAP Class is taught for one week during Summer 2008. Dates TBA. A copy of the detailed schedule will be posted on the E-MAP website. Alternatively, the five week Teacher Program will be offered in conjunction with Summer Term I and Summer Term II schedules. To register: To register as a K-14 Instructor, please send your Name, Institution, and Contact Information to Dr. Karen Boykin at kboykin@eng.ua.edu. There are limited spaces available, so please apply early. Additional information will be needed for CEU credit hours. |
